Oncor works year-round to prepare for impacts to our system caused by severe conditions, whether extreme winter weather or searing summer days.

Freezing temperatures, wintery precipitation and high winds are all factors that interfere with the reliable operation of power lines. Ice and snow can cling to tree limbs, pulling them down into electrical conductors.

To ensure our electric lines are ready to withstand the iciest winter conditions, Oncor performs preventive maintenance – including tree trimming – throughout the year.

To be ready for the days with the highest demand for electricity, Oncor’s technicians use an array of inspection methods to identify potential issues with power lines months before winter.

Routine helicopter and drone inspections take place regularly throughout the year to help identify issues not visible through other methods.

Electrical system equipment, such as transmission lines, transformers and feeder breakers are also inspected by field personnel to ensure they’re ready to operate reliably for our customers under the most challenging of conditions.
