If you’ve lived in Texas for any length of time, you know thunderstorms are possible any time of year. However, spring is when severe weather can happen more frequently
Just as Oncor prepares for spring and year-round for storms, you can prepare your home and family, too. Here are some helpful tips:
Check the Forecast: A great way to be prepared for severe weather is to know when it’s possible. Check your local weather forecast routinely to stay in-the-know.
Did You Know? Oncor’s Weather Current program was created to keep the public informed and safe. You can find regular weather updates on Oncor’s social media channels, including X and Facebook.
Receive Alerts: Be able to receive severe weather alerts when you know severe weather is possible, especially overnight when you may be asleep. This includes enabling alerts on any mobile weather apps you use and enabling mobile government alerts in your phone’s settings.
Oncor customers can also get alerts about power outages and restoration by signing up for My Oncor Alerts. Click here to let us help you get started.
Storm Safety Kit: Have your storm safety kit stocked and ready to go when you need it. Designate a place in your home that everyone knows so it can be easily accessed. Click here to for a list of important items to include in your household’s kit.
Review Your Severe Weather Plan: Make sure each member of your household knows your severe weather safety plan. This includes:
o Knowing where your designated safe spot to ride out a storm is. For most structures, this is the most interior room on the lowest floor.
o Knowing where your storm safety kit is located. Keep your kit in a common space that’s easy to access by all members of your household.
o Knowing what you’ll do to secure your pets during a storm.
When severe weather strikes, Oncor teams will respond as soon as it’s safe to do so. However, lightning, high winds, hail and other severe weather can potentially lead to power outages. Click here to learn how you can be safe and prepared in case of an outage.
