For the next eight months, you’ll most likely find me in a school gym somewhere in our service area. And it will be one filled with hundreds of north Texas school children enthusiastically enjoying a break from the routine.

Not your idea of a dream job? For me, it’s the best assignment I’ve ever had. I’m trying to make sure every one of those children stays safe.

I manage Oncor’s Super Safe Kids program, an initiative we launched in 2018 to educate children about how to be safe around electricity and avoid potential dangers.

Starting in late September, our regular crew of four and countless Oncor volunteers take our 24-foot trailer on the road. We’ll travel to dozens of elementary schools. In school gyms, we’ll set up a 40-foot-wide video wall display and host up to seven shows a day.

I’ve worked for Oncor, or one of its predecessor companies, for nearly 40 years. Nothing’s as important as the safety of our customers and employees.

We created Super Safe Kids as a fun, engaging way for kids, grades K-6, to learn about electrical safety. And we cover what to do in electrical emergencies, from power outages to lightning storms to downed power lines.

So far we've given over 110 presentations to 57,500 students in more than 15 North Texas school districts. This school year, we’re aiming to reach a total of 40,000 school kids.

Our Super Safe Kids team includes presenters Christia Caudle, Leshia Hackney, Jocelyn Townsie and Jason Villarreal. On the big screen, you’ll see our animated helpers: Lineman Luís, Buck the Oncor truck, Volt (a smaller truck) and Stripe the Safety Cone.

Using fun, catchy songs, our characters remind students that if they “see a power line laying on the ground, or it’s hangin’ or droopin’ or swingin’ around,” they need to “keep away, keep away, keep away from all those power lines.”

Believe me, it’s a song you won’t forget. And we’re hoping the kids in our audiences don’t either.

We’re kicking off our 2019-20 effort with programs in Rockwall before moving on to the Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district. Before the end of this year, we’ll be with students in Grapevine-Colleyville.

Next spring, you can catch us in east Texas at the Whitehouse and Jacksonville school districts.

At the end of the day, the kids walk away with a magnet, an activity book, a Super Safe Kids hard hat so that the messages go home with them to share with their family while also learning a healthy respect for electricity.
