When Oncor’s engineers aren’t powering homes and businesses across North Texas, they’re empowering students’ interests in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

From building robots to learning how to wire relay switches, our engineers are proud to share their love for STEM and encourage students to do the same.

This week, engineers, professional trade associations, schools and companies nationwide are celebrating National Engineer's Week, or "EWeek.”

The Feb. 16-22 celebration is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding and interest in STEM. Check out some of the ways Oncor’s engineers share their passion for giving back.

Girls and Engineering Day at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

Oncor actively supports programs that benefit women in STEM and continued the tradition of attending the Girls and Engineering Day at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History last year. The students built spaghetti and marshmallow structures, attended a live arcing demonstration, and even posed for pictures at an Oncor sponsored photo booth. Oncor engineers are excited as ever to return this year to the 2020 girls and engineering day for another memorable day filled learning.

Design Connect Create (DCC)

Physics may be tough, but the girls of DCC are tougher. For three years in a row, Oncor has hosted the young women of the Design Connect Create (DCC) Physics summer camp for a day of fun and learning. During their visit, the students received a substation tour, tested electrical relays for safety and checked out a bucket truck. They also met with a panel of Oncor's brightest female engineers for a Q&A session. Oncor's engineers hope to continue educating the young women of DCC and motivating them to achieve their career goals.

Kappa Kamp

Every summer, young men ages 12-16 gather at Paul Quinn College for Kappa Kamp, a summer enrichment program hosted by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The camp is part of the fraternity's mission to help young men of color develop essential life skills in a structured and safe environment. Oncor employees attended the camp to offer their guidance on pursuing careers in STEM and the utility industry. They gave an interactive presentation that encouraged the students not to limit themselves to a job title, but instead focus on what they're passionate about. Oncor employees look forward to returning each summer to meet new campers and encourage dreaming big.

F.I.R.S.T Robotics

For the second consecutive year, Oncor employees participated in the Dallas Regional F.I.R.S.T. Robotics tournament. F.I.R.S.T is a non-profit organization that supports robotics teams and events across Texas with a focus on increasing accessibility to STEM education for underrepresented students. Oncor donated $50,000 to support three local tournaments in Dallas, Greenville and Plano, including robotics kits for 30 classrooms. Oncor’s engineers were present at the events and spoke about STEM job opportunities and the importance of higher education. Oncor engineers plan to continue supporting the organization's mission and inspiring the next generation of great minds.
