The new $1.2 billion Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas is the newest stadium in Major League Baseball, the home to the 2020 World Series, and possibly one of the most energy efficient.

Oncor worked with heating & air conditioning maker Trane and its contractor to provide sizable energy efficiency incentives through our Take A Load Off Texas program, said Cary Betts, an Oncor Program Manager Specialist.

Keeping 40,000-plus baseball fans cool and comfortable in the Texas summer heat requires a lot of air conditioning and electricity. Read here how Oncor helped bring power to the new stadium.

Trane delivered four, high-efficiency 2,250-ton water-cooled chiller units to cool the stadium. Those are sizeable units, especially compared to the typical home AC unit, which is typically 4 to 6 tons, Betts said.

“We pay an incentive based on the units being more efficient,” Betts said. “The bigger the units, the more opportunity for an incentive.”

The new stadium has a 268,000-square-foot retractable roof for fans to enjoy the weather when it’s cool. But when the thermometer climbs in the summer, the roof can be closed and fans can watch the action in a comfortable 72 degrees.

Betts said Trane, its contractor and the Rangers not only benefited from a sizable incentive payment, but also the ongoing savings from lower energy bills each month.

The energy-efficient chillers save 2,740,807 kWh each year. Roughly, the same amount of electricity to power over 4,100 average homes for a year.

Trane and its HVAC contractor applied for the incentives through Oncor’s commercial standard offer program. A similar program is available for residential customers too. Get more information at www.takealoadofftexas.com
