Award recognizes recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies

DALLAS (January 22, 2025) – Oncor has been recognized with the prestigious Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Emergency Response Award for its response in restoring power and aiding communities impacted by the severe storms in May 2024. This weather event was ranked as the second worst storm in Oncor’s 112-year history and the top damaging storm to hit Dallas County, as measured by customer outages.

The Emergency Response Award is presented to EEI member companies twice a year and recognizes recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events.

“This award reflects the dedication and resilience of our teams, who faced numerous unique challenges from this historic storm and the multiple rounds of severe weather that followed. We recognize that this event was also a significant challenge for our customers, and we appreciate the patience and grace they showed our personnel as we worked around the clock to safely clear debris, rebuild infrastructure and restore power,” said Oncor Chief Operating Officer Jim Greer.

“While we take extensive measures to prepare year-round for inclement weather, it’s our frontline workers and support teams who make the crucial difference in restoring power for our communities after the storm, and we are deeply grateful for their unwavering commitment to safety and service.  We are also thankful for the assistance provided by resources that came to our aid from utilities across eight states,” Greer continued.

The winners of the EEI Emergency Response Award were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process. The awards were presented during EEI’s winter Board of Directors and CEO meeting.

“Throughout 2024, America’s electric companies and their dedicated workforce answered the call to help restore power and hope to communities impacted by extreme weather events and natural disasters,” said EEI interim President and CEO Pat Vincent-Collawn. “EEI commends Oncor for its efforts to respond safely and efficiently to the aftermath of the derecho. Oncor and its storm response team are extremely deserving of this well-earned recovery award.”

The morning of May 27, 2024 a group of severe storms brought hail, lightning, heavy rain and straight-line winds measuring as high as 95 miles per hour. The storms heavily impacted the DFW Metroplex and caused significant damage to facilities across North and East Texas. The movement of multiple storms over several following days resulted in complex restoration challenges, including requiring numerous relocations of resources around the service territory. Mutual assistance utility partners from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and Virginia supported Oncor’s restoration efforts.
