Dealing with the aftermath of a severe storm is difficult.

There’s the possibility of extended power outages and damage to your home. If you have an outage, you want it fixed quickly to keep your family and home safe.

In heavily damaged areas, more complex repairs like removing uprooted trees and debris and replacing damaged utility poles and transformers need to be completed before Oncor can install new power lines.

In some cases, the meter base to your home or business may have been damaged or pulled off as the result of a storm. If so, you will need to contact an electrician to make the necessary repairs before we can restore power. Power cannot be restored until this is completed.

You may also need to get a city inspection. Having repairs and an inspection completed prior to our arrival will help us get service restored to you faster.

Here’s a quick guide to help you know what Oncor will fix and which items are your responsibility.

Oncor owns, maintains and will repair the following:

  • Wooden utility poles
  • Overhead and underground power lines
  • Electric service lines that run between utility poles and to your home
  • Transformers
  • Electric meters

The items below are homeowner responsibilities. To avoid potential hazards, have a licensed, bonded and insured electrician perform all electrical maintenance and repairs.

  • Weatherhead. This is usually a hood-shaped cap on a metal pipe that connects your home to the electric service lines.
  • Electrical wiring in and around your home. This includes wires that connect the weatherhead to the electric meter and any wires leading from the electric meter.
  • Meter base. This is the enclosure that houses the Oncor electric meter and it’s usually on the side your house. If a meter base is damaged, most city electric codes require a building code inspection before electric service can be restored. That means your licensed electrician must install a new meter base and contact the city for an inspection before Oncor can install a new meter or reconnect electric service.

The safety of our customers and employees is our number one priority. Please remember, if you see a downed power line after a storm, call 911 and do not approach the line or allow others to approach it.
